Detox beginner? Here's some helpful tips

May is traditionally Detox month.  We clean out our houses in the Spring, we clean our closets out in the Spring, we plant our gardens, we prepare for a renewal of life in the Spring.  So, it's makes sense that our bodies need the same.  Cleansing our bodies helps our liver and kidney to clean out and be restored to a healthy balance.  We've been breathing in toxic air, especially if you work in a large city, drinking water and sports drinks from plastic water bottles that release toxins over time and eating food that is not 100% organic and clean.  Our bodies need that cleanse.  With big names such as Dr. Oz and Dr. Weil supporting an annual cleanse, many companies have created their own version.

To keep it safe, I recommend that you do a cleanse under the supervision of your wellness doctor, nutritionist or holistic practitioner.  Especially if you're someone who is really looking to change your eating habits(ridding gluten, sugar, dairy, soy) and is starting at an unhealthy base, you may feel lightheaded, nauseous or weak during the first phase, so that professional sounding board is a must!  Second, I suggest doing a cleanse with a buddy.  Maybe it's a co-worker, your partner or adult child.  There may be days you want to throw in the towel and your buddy can be a huge inspiration to keep moving ahead.  Also, sharing the cooking can be helpful.  You will find that you're shopping for new ingredients, often costing a bit more due to keeping it organic, and sharing that cost and buying in bulk is very helpful.  Third, give yourself a break.  To have best results there's no cheating allowed!  But, if you do fall off the cleansing wagon a meal here or there, don't throw in the towel.  You are still doing a huge service for your body and mind and a cheat here and there is not a deal breaker.  I see the panic look in people's eyes when they hear they can't have this or that for 28 days, but once you start to see and feel the goodness you are doing for yourself, it will become easier.

Finally, make a commitment to eat the majority of your meals including these new superfoods you have just lived with for 28 days.  No need to say good-bye to them until the next Spring!  Chances are you will not want to go back to the "older" version of your eating habits, so keep your pantry and fridge well stocked with your new buddies to make it easier.  Living a life fueled by naturally detoxifying foods will change your life in so many ways.  Those aches and pains may diminish immensely or even disappear, your skin will glow and grow, your eyesight may become better and your sleeping habits will have you thinking you're a baby again!  Puffiness under your eyes will diminish, energy levels will substantially increase and  you won't be needing that caffeine driven morning anymore.
